One of the smart things online affiliate marketers normally do when promoting their affilaite links is by making use of url shortners.

Url shortners has to do with making a url destination appear shorter than it actually is.

For most people who are used to affilaite programs, one of the things you get from your platform is the affiliate link and the more you promote that link, the more money you are likely to earn from conversions.

One bad thing about affiliate links however is that they tend to be too long or exposed. Hiding or shortening an affiliate link can help protect your link from being cut short as well as make is easier to use.

Long url links tend to take more space when copying and pasting into your website's code. They may also be cut short if you didn't copy it exactly from your affiliate platform.

There are many free online url shortening services available nowadays and one of the ones I use is Google url shortner (goo.gl). To start using Google url shortner, you just need to at least have a Google account and then you can sign in for free. Once signed in, you just need to enter the actual url and then you'd get a shorter url version to use. For Google users, short urls would normally begin with "goo.gl".

The good thing about url shortners is that they allow you to also track the clicks on your affiliate links using an independent service not in partnership with the merchant or affiliate program.

Sure, most affiliate programs allow you to track your links and impressions from within your account but it may at times seem a bit biased or too much under their control.

Personally, one of the reasons I make use of url shortners is because of the need for an independent tracking system. With my Google account, I'm able to track which campaigns are getting the most clicks and from which websites or geographic area the traffic is coming from and hence I'd get an idea on how to make it more profitable.

If you are an affiliate marketer, one of the things I'd advise you to do is to use a single url shortening service for all your affiliate links so that you'd be able to track, hide and shorten all your affiliate links using a single account.
